SPSS Assignment
For each felon, you’ll find the record number and information about the felon with that number, courtesy of the US Federal Bureau of Prisons. Using the example data from Cronk section 1.2.1, enter and build a data set in SPSS based on this data. Remember to label the variables correctly so they appear in your graphs. If you do that, it will save you a lot of time.
Then answer the following questions (20 points each for a total of 80).
What is the mean age at release for felons in this group (calculate using SPSS)? ______________________
What kind of graph (bar graph, pie graph, or histogram) would best show the proportion of inmates in this group that are serving time for fraud?
Create this graph in SPSS, remembering to give it a title and label. Attach your graph to this sheet.
What kind of graph (bar graph, pie graph, or histogram) would best show the center of the distribution of these inmates’ ages at release and the shape of this distribution?
Create this graph in SPSS, remembering to give it a title and label. Attach your graph to this sheet.
What kind of graph (bar graph, pie graph, or histogram) would best show the number of inmates in this group that are male versus the number that are female?
Create this graph in SPSS, remembering to give it a title and label. Attach your graph to this sheet.
Design a research study to examine if name recognition (i.e., fame) increases (or decreases) the likelihood to commit illegal actions (i.e., commit a crime).
Clearly outline the six steps of the scientific research process and what you would do in your study at each step. Be specific as to what research method—interviews, surveys, archival research, etc.—you would use when you get to the research design step (20 points total).
