Smart Systems Research Project
Smart Systems Research Project
Do research on two of the following topics:
• Smart Highways * Smart Hospitals/Healthcare
• Smart Schools * Smart Businesses/Factories/Warehouses
• Smart Data Centers * Smart Buildings
• Smart Cities (but this incorporate a large number of Smart Sub-Systems that must be considered)
Write a 10-page Word document, double-spaced, detailing each Smart System and its Sub-Systems.
Document at least 20 requirements for each of Smart Systems / its Sub-Systems (40 total).
A Requirement is a short, focused, statement that states what the smart system “must
do”, “will do” or “should do”. See examples at bottom of this document.
Research must include scholarly sources but can also include YouTube videos on the Smart Systems /
Sub-Systems chosen. You must not only detail the requirements of each major system but also the subsystems found in the research.
Note when thinking about sub-systems: consider a home Smart System. Within that
System you might have a sub-system for HVAC, another sub-system for electricity,
another sub-system for communications, and another sub-system for security, etc.
Also view YouTube videos on Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality to extend your research
on how Smart systems may evolve over time (i.e. future applications/functionality).
Your paper should include multiple topic sections/paragraphs, each with a specific focus as defined
below. Make sure your paper flows logically. In your paper, provide the following:
1. An Introduction paragraph that summarizes the project details, identifies the two Smart Systems
chosen, and summarizes the important findings from your paper. Explain what ‘Problem’ your
paper will address (i.e., why are the chosen Smart Systems important). State one or more
Hypothesis that were identified in your research (composed of a short, focused, statement that
your research will either prove or disprove).
2. A major section that summarizes and analyzes your research of the Smart System (with an
appropriate section Heading). Cite all sources and enclose directly copied source material in
double-quotes. Note: there will be 2 major sections – one for each Smart System. Questions
your research might answer include:
a. What is the Smart Systems purpose?
b. What operations does it performs?
c. What are its inputs (resources, interfaces, when used)?
d. What are its outputs (interfaces, data)?
e. How does the technology integrate within the system?
f. How important is the technology to the system?
g. The system’s complexity, cost, and feasibility.
h. Any constraints or risks found during the research.
i. How the various technologies integrate to accomplish the system goals.
Conclude the section with any requirements that might be added in the future, based on enhanced
technology (this may come from your research or from other technologies like Augmented or
Virtual Reality).
2. After each major Smart System section, include sections for each Sub-System (with an
appropriate section Heading) that includes:
a. A description of that Sub-System.
b. Detailed requirements that drive the development of the Sub-System.
Note: see the definition provided at the top of this page and the examples at the end.
c. Conclude the section with any potential requirements that might be added in the future,
based on enhanced technology.
3. Conclude your paper with a Findings section the summarizes the important areas of your
research. Also compare the two Smart Systems and related Smart Sub-systems. Provide the
following:
a. What requirements are common to both Smart Systems.
b. What requirements from one Smart System or Sub-System should or could be applied to
the other Smart System.
c. What future/potential requirements might be included in each Smart System.
To receive full credit for this assignment, you must document the smart system and document how the
sub-systems are integrated as a process(es) within a system (i.e. Smart Cities have a lot of smart tools
but these tools are integrated as a smart system used across multiple platforms – Smart infrastructure,
Smart transportation, etc.)
You must include at least 10 references with citations. Not all references need to be scholarly and can
include videos, websites, blogs, etc.
Example of Requirements for Smart Thermostats
Requirements (for this example, “must” implies highest priority; “will” implies medium priority; and
“should” implies lowest priority)
• Smart thermostats will learn clients’ temperature preferences and establish a schedule that
automatically adjusts temperatures when clients are asleep or away.
• Smart thermostat should know when clients are returning home and automatically adjust clients
home temperature to preferences.
• Smart thermostats must allow clients to control home’s heating and cooling remotely through
mobile devices.
• Smart thermostats must quickly enter a low-power standby mode when inactive.
• Smart thermostats must provide equipment use and temperature data clients can track and
manage.
• Smart thermostats must provide periodic software updates to use the latest algorithms and
energy-saving features available.
