This Biology in the News (BITN) assignment enables you to focus on the connection between the textbook and the world you live in and to recognize how science and technology influence and contribute to modern culture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Select an article from a recent newspaper, periodical, or the Internet which correlates with the content of one or more concepts of instruction covered in the course. Select an article that is written for the general public. Avoid scientific publications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Choose an article that is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 related to content presented in a lesson.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 of appropriate length, not just an announcement and not ten pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 less than three months old.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 From current news, not encyclopedic reference.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Written for the general public, not a scholarly scientific publication.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your BITN paper should contain three parts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>The title page<\/strong> includes the date, your name, course, section, and instructor name in the upper right corner. The title of the article should be centered on the page. Position the article reference citation on the bottom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>The body of the essay <\/strong>will include three carefully written paragraphs. Each paragraph should contain a minimum of four sentences.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paragraph one:<\/strong> Summarize the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the article content.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paragraph two:<\/strong> Correlate the content of the article with the subject matter of a lesson covered in the course. Explain how the textbook helped you understand the article. Did the article agree with or contradict the textbook?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paragraph three:<\/strong> Give your opinion on the content of the article. Explain how the content of the article impacts you, your family and friends. Relate the content of the article to real life by answering two or more of the following questions:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did the article make you aware \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0of things you had not thought of before?<\/li>\n<li>Did the article change your mind \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0about the topic?<\/li>\n<li>Was the article about something \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0you have experienced personally?<\/li>\n<li>Did the article address ethical \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0or public policy issues?<\/li>\n<li>Do you agree or disagree with \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0information presented in your article?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Attach \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0a copy of the article to your paper.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>This assignment counts 20 points<\/strong>. Late work will count half credit. Points are earned as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Format, Presentation, and Citation (4 points)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Cover sheet contains:\n<ul>\n<li>Name, course, section number, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0date, and name of instructor<\/li>\n<li>Article title<\/li>\n<li>Article citation in a standard \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0format such as APA or MLA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Three Paragraphs:\n<ul>\n<li>Minimum of four sentences per \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0paragraph<\/li>\n<li>Article relates to content of a \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Lesson presented in class<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Attach a copy of the article to \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the BITN assignment:\n<ul>\n<li>Article is less than three \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0months old<\/li>\n<li>Article is news, not reference \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0material<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Accurate Written Communication Skills (4 points)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assignment includes coherent \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0paragraphs with proper sentence structure, spelling, grammar, punctuation \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and use of scientific terminology.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Paragraphs should be written in your \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0own words from information in the article and textbook. No parts of the \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0article, textbook, or other sources may be copied. Plagiarism will not be \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0tolerated. Papers the instructor determines contain plagiarism will be \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0given a zero.
