Mini Paper Guidelines<\/h3>\n

You will complete four mini papers worth 25 points each. \u00a0Each paper will require you to do something different and they cover a variety of topics. \u00a0In each case, you are expected to answer the question(s) posted by the paper description as well as apply concepts you learned about the subject from the textbook. \u00a0It is important that you Justify and explain your answers. \u00a0Remember, you are “teaching” me something or attempting to convince me about your point of view.<\/p>\n

Paper Format Requirements:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Must be typed, 12 point font, Times New Roman or Arial, 1 inch margins<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Single or double spaced – your preference<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Minimum of 2 pages and maximum of 3 pages<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Grammar and spell check required<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Logical flow and structure of argument<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Avoid excessive “spacing” or “indentations”<\/p>\n

Mini Paper #1<\/a><\/h3>\n

#1 \u00a0What does communication mean to you? \u00a0In your own words, describe your personal definition of communication. \u00a0Make sure that you explain why you feel this way. \u00a0In doing so, however, keep in mind that your professor makes a big issue of communication and control\/power. \u00a0Is she correct about this? \u00a0Do you see communication as something more or something less than participants’ efforts to control the communication contexts in which they find themselves?<\/p>\n

Mini Paper #2<\/a><\/h3>\n

Be a listening ethnographer! \u00a0Using any listening event* of 20 minutes or more, conduct a deep analysis of the listening environment it exhibits. \u00a0For example, what barriers to effective listening did you identify? \u00a0Were there different forms of noise; how did they manifest themselves; how did they interfere with successful communication? \u00a0What different kinds of listeners were in the room? \u00a0What characteristics did they display that clued you into their listening styles? \u00a0How did they influence that day’s communication? \u00a0Were you able to identify different types of listening from different people? \u00a0How did these folks aid or hinder effective communication that day?<\/p>\n

*An acceptable listening event would include a sermon, a class lecture, a TED Talk, You Tube. \u00a0There should also be an audience.<\/p>\n

Mini Paper #3<\/a><\/h3>\n

Your text provides a definition of culture. \u00a0Take its individual parts and explain how they manifest themselves in your everyday life. \u00a0Here it is expressed in those individual parts:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Culture is the world made meaningful<\/p>\n

\u00b7 It is socially constructed and maintained through communication<\/p>\n

\u00b7 It limits as well as liberates us; it differentiates as well as unites us<\/p>\n

\u00b7 It defines our realities and thereby shapes the ways we think, feel, and act<\/p>\n

Mini Paper #4<\/a><\/h3>\n
