Smart Systems Research Project
\nDo research on two of the following topics:
\n\u2022 Smart Highways * Smart Hospitals\/Healthcare
\n\u2022 Smart Schools * Smart Businesses\/Factories\/Warehouses
\n\u2022 Smart Data Centers * Smart Buildings
\n\u2022 Smart Cities (but this incorporate a large number of Smart Sub-Systems that must be considered)
\nWrite a 10-page Word document, double-spaced, detailing each Smart System and its Sub-Systems.
\nDocument at least 20 requirements for each of Smart Systems \/ its Sub-Systems (40 total).
\nA Requirement is a short, focused, statement that states what the smart system \u201cmust
\ndo\u201d, \u201cwill do\u201d or \u201cshould do\u201d. See examples at bottom of this document.
\nResearch must include scholarly sources but can also include YouTube videos on the Smart Systems \/
\nSub-Systems chosen. You must not only detail the requirements of each major system but also the subsystems found in the research.
\nNote when thinking about sub-systems: consider a home Smart System. Within that
\nSystem you might have a sub-system for HVAC, another sub-system for electricity,
\nanother sub-system for communications, and another sub-system for security, etc.
\nAlso view YouTube videos on Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality to extend your research
\non how Smart systems may evolve over time (i.e. future applications\/functionality).
\nYour paper should include multiple topic sections\/paragraphs, each with a specific focus as defined
\nbelow. Make sure your paper flows logically. In your paper, provide the following:
\n1. An Introduction paragraph that summarizes the project details, identifies the two Smart Systems
\nchosen, and summarizes the important findings from your paper. Explain what \u2018Problem\u2019 your
\npaper will address (i.e., why are the chosen Smart Systems important). State one or more
\nHypothesis that were identified in your research (composed of a short, focused, statement that
\nyour research will either prove or disprove).
\n2. A major section that summarizes and analyzes your research of the Smart System (with an
\nappropriate section Heading). Cite all sources and enclose directly copied source material in
\ndouble-quotes. Note: there will be 2 major sections \u2013 one for each Smart System. Questions
\nyour research might answer include:
\na. What is the Smart Systems purpose?
\nb. What operations does it performs?
\nc. What are its inputs (resources, interfaces, when used)?
\nd. What are its outputs (interfaces, data)?
\ne. How does the technology integrate within the system?
\nf. How important is the technology to the system?
\ng. The system\u2019s complexity, cost, and feasibility.
\nh. Any constraints or risks found during the research.
\ni. How the various technologies integrate to accomplish the system goals.
\nConclude the section with any requirements that might be added in the future, based on enhanced
\ntechnology (this may come from your research or from other technologies like Augmented or
\nVirtual Reality).
\n2. After each major Smart System section, include sections for each Sub-System (with an
\nappropriate section Heading) that includes:
\na. A description of that Sub-System.
\nb. Detailed requirements that drive the development of the Sub-System.
\nNote: see the definition provided at the top of this page and the examples at the end.
\nc. Conclude the section with any potential requirements that might be added in the future,
\nbased on enhanced technology.
\n3. Conclude your paper with a Findings section the summarizes the important areas of your
\nresearch. Also compare the two Smart Systems and related Smart Sub-systems. Provide the
\nfollowing:
\na. What requirements are common to both Smart Systems.
\nb. What requirements from one Smart System or Sub-System should or could be applied to
\nthe other Smart System.
\nc. What future\/potential requirements might be included in each Smart System.
\nTo receive full credit for this assignment, you must document the smart system and document how the
\nsub-systems are integrated as a process(es) within a system (i.e. Smart Cities have a lot of smart tools
\nbut these tools are integrated as a smart system used across multiple platforms \u2013 Smart infrastructure,
\nSmart transportation, etc.)
\nYou must include at least 10 references with citations. Not all references need to be scholarly and can
\ninclude videos, websites, blogs, etc.
\nExample of Requirements for Smart Thermostats
\nRequirements (for this example, \u201cmust\u201d implies highest priority; \u201cwill\u201d implies medium priority; and
\n\u201cshould\u201d implies lowest priority)
\n\u2022 Smart thermostats will learn clients\u2019 temperature preferences and establish a schedule that
\nautomatically adjusts temperatures when clients are asleep or away.
\n\u2022 Smart thermostat should know when clients are returning home and automatically adjust clients
\nhome temperature to preferences.
\n\u2022 Smart thermostats must allow clients to control home\u2019s heating and cooling remotely through
\nmobile devices.
\n\u2022 Smart thermostats must quickly enter a low-power standby mode when inactive.
\n\u2022 Smart thermostats must provide equipment use and temperature data clients can track and
\nmanage.
\n\u2022 Smart thermostats must provide periodic software updates to use the latest algorithms and
