Forecasting<\/p>\n

Your boss comes in \u201cwith their hair on fire\u201d, and says, \u201cjust came \u00a0from a staff meeting and the CEO announced the building next door is \u00a0coming available at a really good price per square foot.\u201d\u00a0 He needs you \u00a0to tell him if the forecasted demand for the next 36 months is high \u00a0enough that we may need some of the new space.\u00a0 He follows up with, \u201cIf \u00a0we miss this opportunity, and later we figure out that we need more \u00a0space then the only option is to rent space in another building about 5 \u00a0miles away at almost double the price per square foot\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the operations manager, the last thing you want to do is to split \u00a0your staff across two different buildings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

That is going to be a \u00a0staffing and scheduling headache, not to mention morale will take a \u00a0hit.\u00a0Do you shoot from the hip and tell your boss, \u201cno doubt, forecasted \u00a0demand indicates we can use the space\u201d, or do you say, \u201clet me run the \u00a0forecast and get back to you later today\u201d?\u00a0 Which response has the most \u00a0risk?\u00a0 Are you willing to bet your job on your answer?<\/p>\n

Forecasting is both an art and a science.\u00a0 In the assignments for \u00a0Unit 2 you will get the opportunity to practice forecasting by solving \u00a0end of chapter problems and completing a linear trending assignment. In \u00a0order to determine if it makes sense to rent additional space, it will \u00a0be important to assess the level of operational efficiency of existing \u00a0processes associated with the delivery of products to consumers. \u00a0Improving process efficiencies could result in a reduction in labor \u00a0requirements. Maybe the company can support greater demand with a leaner \u00a0labor force. In this unit, in addition to applying forecasting models \u00a0to scenarios, you will also gain a more in-depth understanding of the \u00a0concept and practices used to create efficient organizations.<\/p>\n
