As such, a researcher should identify the variables to be investigated during the experiment (Carpenter, Short, Williams, Yandell, & Bowers, 2015).

In my clinical practice, I have identified a problem that requires research and I will use the quantitative approach to come up with possible solutions. My topic of interest is eating habits and their impact on the health outcomes of individuals.

Carpenter, Short, Williams, Yandell, and Bowers (2015) suggest that research should have two main types of variables which are the independent and dependent. The Independent variable is defined as the variable that can be changed or controlled during an experiment and it affects the dependent variable while the Dependent variable is the variable that depends on other variables. In line with this guideline, my independent variable will be eating habits and the dependent one will be the health outcome of individuals.

Bettany‐Saltikov and Whittaker (2014) suggest that the problem should be structured into a hypothesis that is clear and unambiguous. A hypothesis is a guess on how things work and it should be in line with the topic of research. In line with this suggestion, the hypothesis for my quantitative research will be ‘Healthy eating habits promote positive health outcomes in individuals.’

Since quantitative research should be supported by theories or facts, this research is supported by statistics. In my clinical practice, I have identified that most of the individuals who visit the hospital have a lifestyle disease and I believe that the prevalence of these illnesses can be reduced by adopting healthy eating habits. Statistics released by the Department of Health indicate that about half of all American adults suffer from chronic diseases that can be prevented by healthy eating habits and physical activity (Department of Health, 2015). Therefore, my quantitative research is supported by facts.

In their research, Carpenter, Short, Williams, Yandell, and Bowers (2015) have structured their research question using the PEO format where the P component refers to the patient, E refers to exposure and O to the outcome

Following the example of this research, my research question is “What is the impact of healthy eating habits on the health outcomes of adults?”

For my research P is adults, E is healthy eating habits and O is the health outcomes.

A review of the literature should be conducted to help the researcher identify what is known and unknown regarding their area of study (Carpenter, Short, Williams, Yandell, & Bowers, 2015). In my research, I will review studies conducted in the past by stating their strengths and weaknesses. The review will provide me with background information for my research.

The four main designs of quantitative research are correlational, descriptive, and experimental (Hoe & Hoare, 2012). In the correlational research design, the researcher explores the interrelationship amongst variables of interest without being actively involved in the research (Hoe & Hoare, 2012). The descriptive research portrays the characteristics of the situation, individuals or groups without influencing them in any way (Hoe & Hoare, 2012). Experimental research is the most preferred in clinical practice and they involve controlling the independent variable by randomly assigning different conditions to the subjects (Hoe & Hoare, 2012).

In my research, I will use the experimental research design where I will carry out an experiment using my participants. I will ask my participants to adopt healthy eating habits for a given period then we will analyze the impact on their health and compare that to their previous eating habits.

To collect data from the participants which will mainly be their feedback on healthy eating habits, I will use a self-reported questionnaire. The self-reported questionnaire will allow the respondents to share their experiences.

To ensure reliability and validity, a similar self-reported questionnaire will be used among all the participants. The response of the participants will be graded using a 5-point Likert scale whose measurements will be adapted in line with the type of questions.

I will use the convenience sampling method where I will get participants from the hospital I work. The participants will include staff and patients who will be interested in the research. I will send invites via email and letters to the staff and patients and pick the first fifty to respond as my participants.

To ensure I comply with ethical guidelines, I will have a consent form for the participants. In the consent form, I will brief the participants on the research and inform them of their freedom to quit at any given time. I will also guarantee their confidentiality by maintaining anonymity. In the questionnaires, the participants will be given a number for identification but their names will not be required. I will also comply with our organization guidelines on research.

Results and Analysis Section

Analysis of the data collected can involve either differential or inferential statistics. In inferential statistics, a researcher is allowed to infer whether the outcomes of the sample might be replicated in a larger population (Bettany‐Saltikov & Whittaker, 2014). On the other hand, descriptive statistics only synthesizes the data collected to show patterns or trends.

I will use the inferential statistics approach where I will use the results of my participants to give a position on whether healthy eating habits promote positive health outcomes. Based on my position, I hope to encourage individuals to adopt healthy eating habits and consequently lower the prevalence of preventable chronic diseases in America.

I will use the SPSS software for analysis because it will allow me to present raw figures and percentages to my readers and thereafter use visual formats such as tables, graphs, and histograms. SPSS will also allow me to import information to my word document which makes it easy to use.

After I get my findings, I will interpret the results in a discussion section. In my discussion section, I will provide recommendations on some of the healthy eating habits that individuals can adopt, ways to maintain the habits and inform them on how they will positively impact their health.

I will conclude my study by stating the limitations I encountered and areas I feel future researchers can focus on.

I hope that my research will encourage the American adult population to adopt healthy eating habits and pass on this behavior to children and the youth.

Other sections that I will include are the reference list which will provide a detailed list of the books, articles, and websites used throughout the paper. A reference list is part of ethical research because it will ensure that I give credit to the original authors of the material I use in my research.

I will also provide an appendix that will contain the questionnaires I used.

A Research in Clinical Practice Definition Quantitative research refers to the gathering of quantifiable data and performing mathematical, computational, or statistical analysis to come up with evidence-based solutions to problems experienced in clinical practice.
