According to the textbook, prison reform is often effectuated by and \u00a0through the legislature. Often, these changes are meant for improvement; \u00a0however, they can have an unintended consequence. Imagine that you are a \u00a0state legislator that heads a committee for the Department of \u00a0Corrections. Your responsibilities include recommending improvements to \u00a0the correctional system, both domestic and international, (e.g., \u00a0Guantanamo Bay). Go to Cornell University Law School\u2019s Website, located \u00a0at http:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/constitution\/eighth_amendment<\/a>, and review the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n

Write a three to five (3-5) page paper in which you:<\/p>\n

  1. Suggest two (2) actions that the corrections system can take in \u00a0order to attain higher levels of professionalism. Provide a rationale \u00a0for your response.<\/li>\n
  2. Take a position as to whether or not conditions of correctional \u00a0facilities circumvent the \u201ccruel and unusual punishment standard\u201d of the \u00a0Eighth Amendment. Provide a rationale for your response.<\/li>\n
  3. Support or refute the removal of corporal punishment from the U.S. corrections system. Provide a rationale for your response.<\/li>\n
  4. Create an argument for or against intermediate sanctions as a \u00a0deterrent of crime. Support your viewpoint with one (1) example of \u00a0intermediate sanctions that reflects your opinion.<\/li>\n
  5. Debate whether or not correctional facilities are adequately \u00a0equipped to deal with mentally ill inmates. Provide a rationale for your \u00a0response.<\/li>\n
