safety, which includes a 3 page article critque. Include at least 4 – 8 references in addition to the
course textbooks and the Bible.
You will need to complete the following to write this paper, which will focus on improving
efficiency and patient safety.
1. Hospital Readmissions
a. Hospital readmissions are often significant, largely preventable, and costly.
Readmission rates vary across diagnostic groups and among hospitals in various
regions of the United States (Medicare, Payment Advisory Commission
[MedPac], 2007). Using the Hospital Compare HHS and Medicare website links
located in the Staffing and Budget Exercise Assignment under Staffing and
Budget Resources or check the CDC’s website. Select a disease/disorder such as
asthma or pneumonia to review. Once you find a disorder you are interested in
and the 30-day readmission rates, compare your organization’s 30-day
readmission rate or compare a local organization’s 30-day readmission rate.
b. Propose at least 3 reasons for your setting (or local setting’s) 30-day readmission
rate as well as at least 3 ideas for interventions to reduce and control readmissions
at your hospital or local organization.
c. Be sure to link and discuss organizational theory and financial decision-making
strategies.
2. RN overtime hours and costs: As discussed in the last scenario in Chapter 4, the CNO of
Pacific Hospital realizes that overtime hours and costs are excessive. The budget target is
to reduce weekly overtime hours per full-time RN from 6.5 to 4.0 hours. Strategies may
include substitutes for overtime (Berney, Needleman, & Kovner, 2005), interventions
such as rapid response teams to quickly address patient complications (Thomas, Force,
Rasmusen, Dodd, and Whildin, 2007), and other ideas. Use an evidence-based approach
to propose 3–5 strategies in order to reduce overtime at Pacific Hospital. Prepare a table
showing your analysis of the reduction in overtime and related cost savings.
