Power of Attorney Ethical Dilemma Scenario
Ethical Dilemmas in Nursing
As a DNP prepared provider, you are faced with your patient’s son who is the medical power of attorney asking you not to tell the patient (his father) the truth about his medical condition revealing a terminal illness, prognosis and plan of care. Discuss how you would resolve the issues at hand by incorporating the corresponding Code of Ethics, other leadership strategies and Biblical worldview to combat the way the power of attorney is asking you to handle the situation.
To resolve this issue, the following steps would be taken;
- Patient autonomy vs beneficence per the principles of bioethics.
- Being honest with a patient vs withholding information.
- End-of-life decision making for a patient with a terminal illness.
- Professional and personal boundaries.
- The healthcare needs of a patient when receiving care.
